Book Title: Change of Heart
Publication Date: March, 2008
Summary: Shay Bourne was arrested for a double homicide and sentenced to death for his crime. Months before his execution, Bourne was transferred to I-tier, which is the death row in his prison. Most of the fellow death row inmates never gave him too much thought, until miracles start to happen. Was Shay Bourne the new messiah? This is a story of controversy in religion and the execution of prisoners. It is told in the alternating views of Shay's religious advisor, who has more to his story with Shay than he lets on to those around him, the wife and mother of Shay's victims, Shay's lawyer, and a fellow death row inmate.
Memorable Moment (page 135): "Religion gave hope to people who knew the end wasn't pretty. It was why inmates started praying in prison and why patients started praying when the doctor said terminal. Religion was supposed to be a blanket drawn up to your chin to keep you warm, a promist that when it came to the end, you wouldn't die alone- but it could just as easily leave you shivering out in the cold, if what you believed in became more important than the fact that you believed.
Recommendation: Anyone that has an interest in religion should read this book because religion is a major contraversy throughout the book. People who are interested in what happens in death row should also read this. Jodi Picoult does a lot of research and her description of death row is pretty accurate. The last group of people that should read this book are those coping with a loss. They will be able to relate to the family of Shay Bourne's victims.
Book Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
